Creative Scotland and the British Council support Scottish art in Germany
Creative Futures in Germany is designed to help promote Scottish art and nurture professional artists resident in Scotland to exhibit in public or commercial spaces in Germany. The programme also contributes to artists-in-residencies in Germany.
Who can apply?
All those working in the visual arts, new media arts, design, and the crafts fulfilling the following criteria:
■Artists must live and work in Scotland and must have a professional track record.
■Artists must have a firm offer of a project in Germany in writing.
■Artists must have made no previous application under the scheme for help with the same project.
Applications may be submitted by the artists themselves, or, on their behalf, by professional curators, organisers and art administrators who wish to present the artists’ work in Germany. Please ensure that all artists have been made aware that an application has been made on their behalf.
What can I get help with and what are the conditions?
■Applicants may request assistance in meeting the costs of the transport and packing of the artists’ work to and from Scotland and Germany. Creative Futures in Germany can only give a contribution towards these costs.
■Applicants may also request assistance in meeting artists’ travel costs where the artists’ presence is essential.
■Creative Futures in Germany will not assist with either the production costs of the work, framing and other preparation costs, and not normally catalogue costs. Nor will it assist with subsistence costs.
■The way the British Council Germany can add value to this is by ensuring venues and partners in Germany will meet all reasonable local costs (e.g., publicity, catalogue, private view, invitation cards, customs and importation charges etc) in connection with the project. In addition, venues are normally expected to contribute towards the international transport and packing costs and towards artists’ subsistence costs where their presence is essential.
■Applicants should avoid entering into any advance commitments in the belief that a grant will be made. British Council Germany and Creative Scotland will not be bound by any commitments made before applications are considered.
How do I apply?
■Please contact elke.ritt@britishcouncil.de, who will be able to supply more information.
■A copy of the letter of invitation and/or contract from the host venue/ organisers is needed. Where an invitation or contract is written in a language other than English, a translation should be provided.
■A recent CV/brief biography for each artist.
■Copies of quotes or estimates for travel, transport, packaging requests.
How are awards made?
Selection is made on the basis of the applicant’s CV and proposal and will also take the standing of the venue and the value of the exhibition in terms of British Council Germany’s and Creative Scotland’s strategic priorities into account .
Decisions and payments
■Investment usually is between GBP 500-GBP 5,000.
■Applicants are informed of the result of their application no later than 12 weeks after the confirmation of the receipt of the application.
