"GWDG Compute Cloud" simplifies deployment and management of servers
The GWDG has expanded its extensive offer of IT services to include the new "GWDG Compute Cloud". A web based user interface developed by GWDG enables scientists, teachers, and students to create and manage servers and access them via a graphical interface. The "GWDG Compute Cloud" is currently being evaluated as part of an initial test phase for the IT departments of the Max Planck Institutes and the University of Göttingen. Together with the recently introduced service "GWDG Cloud Share", these services are important components of the cloud service offering of GWDG.
The "GWDG Compute Cloud" is a service similar to well-known commercial compute cloud services. The GWDG, though, pays special attention to the needs of scientists regarding this service. Using the web based interface, users of the "GWDG Compute Cloud" can create and maintain servers. For this purpose, several widespread Linux operating systems are available for direct usage. During the creation of a server, the user can choose from various flavours in terms of available processors, memory and storage. The GWDG realizes the "GWDG Compute Cloud" making use of open source products such as OpenStack, KVM, and Linux.
Access to the graphical user interface of the server is granted directly from within the user’s web browser providing means to manage the respective systems. To make the server accessible via the Internet, public IP addresses are available which can be flexibly assigned. Security settings allow the user to configure the access rules (firewall) for the servers. All machines are operated in the data centre of GWDG on state-of-the-art hardware and in accordance with current data protection and privacy regulations.
In a first test phase, the IT departments of the Max Planck Institutes and the University of Göttingen evaluate the functionality and can provide suggestions to optimize the "GWDG Compute Cloud" offering. The findings will be taken into account during the ongoing preparations for a public test phase, in which the "GWDG Compute Cloud" will be available to all members of the Max Planck Society and the University of Göttingen. Upon successful completion of the "GWDG Compute Cloud" test phase, it will be transferred in a timely fashion into a production-ready offering.
About the GWDG:
The Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG) is a joint facility of the Georg-August-University Göttingen and the Max-Planck-Society. It functions as a data and IT competence centre for the Max-Planck-Society and as a computing centre of the University of Göttingen. Its scientific research objectives are embedded in the field of applied informatics. Furthermore, it facilitates the training of qualified IT personnel.
