German Science Council reaccredits ESMT and recommends the right to grant PhDs
The German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat) has accredited ESMT European School of Management and Technology for another ten years. In its final report, the Council recommends to the Berlin Senate that the international business school receive the right to confer doctoral degrees.
Jörg Rocholl, President of ESMT, said, “Both the reaccreditation and the recommendation that ESMT should have the right to award PhDs confirm ESMT’s successful development. I would like to thank the Council for their valuable direction, which has provided an important impetus for the development of our school.”
The process is now in the hands of the Berlin Senate, which commissioned the German Science Council with the year-long accreditation process and confers the right to award doctorate degrees. After receiving the right to grant PhDs, ESMT will continue to take an active role in the joint doctoral program Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics and Management Science (BDPEMS).
Paul Heidhues, Director of PhD Studies at ESMT, commented, “BDPEMS has established itself within the top tier of doctoral programs in Germany. We are looking forward to increasing our involvement in this pioneering program that brings outstanding international young academics to Berlin.”
BDPEMS is a joint initiative of international scholars of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, WZB Berlin Social Research Center, and ESMT. The program integrates the closely linked areas of economics and business administration and is interdisciplinary in its teaching and research. It follows leading international standards and emphasizes rigorous analytical methods and quantitative analysis.
After completion of the three- to five-year program with a focus on econometrics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and management science, candidates are conferred the internationally recognized degree of PhD. ESMT has been awarding scholarships within the BDPEMS since 2008. Currently ESMT is supporting three PhD students; further PhD students in the program are being financed by a number of other scholarships. Two students receive funds from the Marie Curie Actions-Research Fellowship Program of the European Union which were procured by ESMT.
