Pythagorean Harmonics from Philolaus to Leibniz | An international and interdisciplinary workshop
On October 19 and 20, ECLA of Bard is pleased to host the international and interdisciplinary workshop "Pythagorean Harmonics from Philolaus to Leibniz (2000 years of productive tension between the discrete and the continuous)." Scholars from around the world will gather at ECLA of Bard to discuss recent discoveries and emerging research on early Pythagorean number theory beyond disciplinary boundaries and time periods. Workshop participants are, among others, Andrew Barker (University of Birmingham), Iain Fenlon (University of Cambridge), and Joulia Strauss, a Berlin-based video & performance artist.
"We believe it is incumbent upon humanistic scholars like ourselves to show that the object of humanistic inquiry is to investigate those matters of concern that rest unexplored underneath the presuppositions of «disciplinary knowledge» and among the interstices of that with which these disciplines concern themselves. One striking example of the serious consequences of separating humanities and theoretical science education from each other and from other fields of practical concern is the recent financial crisis and its larger context, in which policymaking has been guided by an economics of abstract mathematical modeling conceived in isolation from engagement with everyday experiences. In this workshop, we aim to expose the ways and means by which cutting-edge research in the humanities requires not only the «cross-fertilization» among the various humanistic disciplines, but also an awareness of and openness to the intersection of humanities and the exact sciences, which could make a significant contribution to the better integration of these disciplines in our society." – Prof. Dr. Michael Weinman, Philosophy, and Dr. Geoff Lehman, Art History, ECLA of Bard (organizers)
Time: Saturday, October 19, 2013 from 13:45 to 22:00
