ESMT receives right to grant PhDs
- Berlin Senate grants ESMT right to award PhDs
- Status as a state recognized institution of higher education in Germany extended for another 10 years
ESMT European School of Management and Technology has received the right to award PhDs from Berlin for the length of five years. At the same time, Berlin has extended the international business school’s status as a state recognized institution of higher education in Germany for another ten years, the longest possible period.
On July 15, 2013, the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) had recommended that ESMT receive the right to award doctorate degrees. Since 2008 ESMT has participated in the Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics and Management Science (BDPEMS) and will continue to take an active role in the program. BDPEMS is a joint initiative of international scholars of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, WZB Berlin Social Research Center, and ESMT.
“Receiving the right to award PhDs is an important milestone for ESMT. It encourages us to continue to strive for excellence in research and in teaching,” said Jörg Rocholl, President of ESMT. “We are proud to be a part of Berlin’s academic landscape and to enrich its diversity.”
“This decision is a special acknowledgement of the high quality of ESMT’s academic achievements,” said Michael Diekmann, CEO of Allianz SE and Chairman of the ESMT Foundation Board of Trustees. “I welcome the fact that the Berlin Senate has recognized the successful development of ESMT.”
