University of Kassel: Recipients of the Alternative Nobel Prize promote the "Right Livelihood"
The Center for Teacher Education at the University of Kassel is developing a concept that will allow the subjects of ecology, social justice and peace studies to be integrated in the training that teachers receive. Three recipients of the Alternative Nobel Prize will take part in a conference devoted to this purpose.
How can the ideas of the "Right Livelihood Award" (also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize") regarding ecology, social justice and peace studies be integrated into school programmes and lessons in the context of a future-orientated teacher training? An international conference addressing this question entitled "Teaching Right Livelihood – Education in a Globalized World" has been organised by the Center for Teacher Education at the University of Kassel and will take place on 22-23 May 2014. Together with three recipients of the Right Livelihood Awards and other prominent speakers associated with the field of education for sustainable development, 130 participants will take on the subject of "Global Development" from scientific, social and educational perspectives. The aim of the conference is to develop concepts that will make it possible to firmly integrate the subjects of ecology, social justice and peace studies in teacher training at the University of Kassel. The conference has been organised in close cooperation with the Right Livelihood Award Foundation and the Right Livelihood College and has been supported by the Heidehof Foundation, the “Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft” as well as the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst - DAAD).
In a novel combination combining a scholarly conference and practical pedagogical forums, educationalists, specialists and scholars from different faculties at the University of Kassel will work on model formats together with trainers from teaching seminars, teachers, students and pupils. The objective will be to develop material conveying the Right Livelihood content in an interdisciplinary form that is based on real experience and is appropriate for various age groups. In addition to the conference, seminars will be offered in various faculties at the University of Kassel in which students in teacher training will have the opportunity to encounter the invited Right Livelihood Award recipients and discuss subjects from varying perspectives involving theoretical and professional issues. Schools from the Kassel region will also be included in these seminars. The concepts and teaching materials developed in the course of these various activities will be presented to the award recipients and conference participants, developed further with their input and then published at a later date.
Three recipients of the Right Livelihood Award will take part at the conference: Prof. Dr. Raúl Montenegro (Argentina), Dipal C. Barua (Bangladesh) and Dr. Sima Samar (Afghanistan).
With the speakers Dr. Monika Griefahn, former environmental minister and co-chair and jury member of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation, Prof. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, co-president of the Club of Rome, Prof. Dr. Gerd Michelsen, board member of the German UNESCO Commission and member of the UN National Committee "Education for Sustainable Development”, Prof. Dr. Claus Vajen, Prof. Dr. Claudia Lohrenscheit und PD Dr. Aram Ziai, a group of renowned experts has been assembled who will provide various specialist views regarding the significance of the featured projects.
