Stars align for the future of the Heidelberg Laureate Forum
Klaus Tschira Stiftung commits to financially supporting the international meeting of laureates from mathematics and computer science
For the third consecutive year, the recipients of the most prestigious prizes in mathematics and computer science met at the annual Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) to network with promising young researchers in their fields. At the conception of the Forum with the supporting institutions, a clause was included to hold the HLF to a five-year preliminary run.
However, Beate Spiegel, Chairperson of the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation, which organizes the HLF, and Managing Director of the German foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), emphatically assured the bright future of the HLF.“From our perspective, we can say after three Forums that the idea works and that the series should be continued indefinitely,” she addressed the laureates and young researchers at the closing dinner of the 3rd HLF on August 28, 2015. “For the Klaus Tschira Stiftung, I can confirm that we committed to provide the necessary support, and if the supporting institutions ACM, IMU and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters share that positive assessment – which I hope they do – it will be a very easy exercise to remove the limiting clause from the contract.”
26 Laureates of the Fields Medal, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the Nevanlinna Prize and the Abel Prize and the 200 young researchers that participated in the HLF came from all corners of the globe, and were visibly pleased to hear the news. In total, they covered 1,148,220 kilometers, or three times the distance from the earth to the moon, to come to Heidelberg and enjoy the HLF experience. Laureate lectures, postdoc workshops and ample time for the participants to acutely interact are woven into the fabric of the HLF, with each year creating individual experiences for those involved. In addition, there was a variety of social events designed to keep the atmosphere informal and the conversations flowing.
2015 also included the premier of the ‘Lindau Lecture’ series which consists of an exchange between the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and the Heidelberg Laureate Forum. Each year, the conferences will host a fellow laureate to give a speech at the respective events. It was inaugurated at the 3rd HLF by a lecture from Heidelberg University alumnus and 2014 Nobel laureate in chemistry, Stefan Hell. At the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in 2016, the HLF will be represented by 2004 ACM A.M. Turing Award recipient Vinton Cerf, one of the fathers of the internet who has attended all three Forums.
“Brave New Data World”, the Hot Topic of the 3rd HLF, tackled the socio-economic challenges of computational science. A meticulously chosen expert panel discussed the present and future of data management in depth, followed by young researcher facilitated workshops and concluding with an open debate.
The 4th HLF will take place from September 18-23, 2016, and the online application tool will be opened for young researchers this November 1, and be closed on February 3,2016.

Background
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) annually organizes the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), which is a networking event for mathematicians and computer scientists from all over the world. The 3rd Heidelberg Laureate Forum took place from August 23 to 28, 2015. The HLF was initiated by the German foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), which promotes natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). The Forum is organized by the HLFF along with the KTS and HITS. It is strongly supported by the award-granting institutions, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM: ACM A.M. Turing Award), the International Mathematical Union (IMU: Fields Medal, Nevanlinna Prize), and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA: Abel Prize).
