Gregor Renner of the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Freiburg (Germany) is the new president of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication ISAAC
Communication is possible, even if the ability to speak or move is heavily impeded. None other than Steven Hawking has proven this for all the world to see. He is one of the most famous examples for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and winner of ISAAC’s lifetime achievement award. The International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication ISAAC has 1500 members worldwide. It is the only society for AAC, which the United Nations recognised as an NGO. In this position, ISAAC has played a key role in the formulation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
On October 1st, Gregor Renner, Professor at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences, Freiburg (Germany), started his three years as ISAAC’s president. Renner’s teaching and research chiefly comprise inclusive education and Augmentative and Alternative Communi-cation. Under his presidency, ISAAC will hold two international conferences on AAC. Gregor Renner aims at establishing sustainable networks and help centres for AAC in Asia and Africa as well as pushing international research.
