The opening of High Tech Campus Villach is another step for Carinthia towards becoming an attractive innovation cluster for research, work and education. High Tech Campus Villach’s new building was officially opened by Deputy Governor of Carinthia Gaby Schaunig, Mayor Günther Albel, Gilbert Isep (CTR partner) and Hans Schönegger, Director of High Tech Campus Villach. CTR Carinthian Tech Research AG was represented by the two board members Werner Scherf and Simon Grasser.

NEW STARTING POINT FOR INNOVATIONS
“We are glad to have additional space for new innovation projects. Cutting-edge research aiming for international excellence in technical and scientific fields in particular needs high-tech infrastructure. It will increase our visibility and make CTR and the technology cluster more attractive as a whole,” says CTR’s CEO Werner Scherf. The new building also involves investment in the high-tech laboratories on the part of the research centre. “CTR has already invested about a million euros in the facilities and above all the research cleanrooms,” says Scherf. Long-term support from the owners and funding bodies will therefore be all the more important if we are to implement our research strategy successfully.

HIGH-TECH IN ATTRACTIVE DESIGN
Although featuring technology of the highest standard, the new building still has very impressive, attractive architecture. The 3,000 square metres of space rented by CTR houses laboratories, two state-of-the-art research cleanrooms and offices. A total of some 70 researchers moved into the new building. There are plans however to increase the number of highly qualified professionals. “The new building provides us with a new home where our customers and partners can make use of the latest high-tech facilities,” says CTR’s CFO Simon Grasser.

COMMENTS ON THE OPENING
“High Tech Campus Villach is another milestone in implementing the Carinthia 2020 strategy for research, technology development and innovation. What is worth mentioning in particular is the CTR research cleanroom, which is available to the centre’s partners in science and industry,” says Deputy Governor Gaby Schaunig.
“The new High Tech Campus greatly enhances our location’s infrastructure and with the research cleanroom we are also strengthening our leading position as the high-tech and research centre in the south.” Only 12 per cent of Carinthia’s population lives in Villach, states Mayor Günther Albel. “And yet 50 per cent of all Carinthian patents are to be found here.”
“After completion, scheduled for 2024 at the latest, which will take the area to 16,000 square metres, around 500 jobs will be created in the areas of research, development and production technologies,” adds Campus Director Hans Schönegger.

HISTORY
Founded in 1997 by the Carinthian government, Villach town council, Federation of Carinthian Industries (IV) and Fraunhofer Gesellschaft (Germany), the CTR research centre was initially in Villach’s Badstubenweg. In 2000 it moved to the Villach Technology Park where the three pillars of business, research and education are combined to create synergies. After 15 years, CTR is now located in the new building at High Tech Campus Villach, only 400 metres away from the previous premises. New address: Europastrasse 12, 9524 Villach

CTR CARINTHIAN TECH RESEARCH AG
CTR is a non-university research centre for smart sensors and system integration. An innovation driver for science and industry, CTR is involved in regional, national and international research projects. Intelligent sensors and integrated microsystems make products and processes safer, smarter and more effective. As a result, CTR is well equipped for emerging technologies such as Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things and wearable electronics. CTR’s research customers are to be found, for example, in the semi-conductor, engineering, automotive, life science, food and space industries. Together with partners in science and industry, the team of researchers has already filed over 75 patents. CTR is a member of FORSCHUNG AUSTRIA and certified to EN ISO 9001. It is part of the COMET programme as a K1 centre of excellence with ASSIC - Austrian Smart Systems Integration Research Center.
