New spin-off in the pharmaceuticals sector.
The Competence Center RCPE, which deals with the optimization of processes and products in the pharmaceuticals sector, adopted its fourth spinoff in October. MeltPrep offers its customers tools for preparing samples for thermoplastic materials. Young founder, D. Treffer, developed a method especially interesting for the pharmaceutical and plastics industry. The method simplifies the preparation and also enhances the samples’ quality. Analysis results are easier to calculate, faster and more precise.
Mr. Treffer, you're going to become self-employed with MeltPrep. How was the idea born?
The idea was born during my dissertation at RCPE and at the TU Graz. I had the task to characterize the flow properties of polymer melts. The measurements were, caused to non-standardized preparation, significantly affected by errors and time consuming. I dealt with alternative solutions and finally sketched the concept of vacuum compression moulding ( VCM ). So I was able to achieve better analysis results and needed only a fraction of the time formerly requirement. Up to now, the sample preparation took at least one hour; the production with the developed VCM method is possible in less than 10 minutes.
MeltPrep developed tools for preparing samples for thermoplastic materials. Which materials can be used and in which areas are they applied?
Among thermoplastic materials are substances which soften or melt under the action of elevated temperature. The major area of application is the field of plastics industry, but also in the pharmaceutical industry and in the food and dietary supplement industries such materials are equally used.
What are the products’ benefits for the user?
Users benefit from a simplified sample preparation. For the formulation development in the pharmaceutical industry the VCM method provides the advantage of an easier generation of more layer dosage forms. Innovative formulations can be tested in very small scale without the need to invest new and very expensive equipment in advance.
How do you judge the founder Styria as a business location?
Styria offers great opportunities for startups. The Science Park is a strong support, but also initiatives like the idea engine are a good place to collect information in the initial phase and to exchange experiences. Young entrepreneurs can benefit from a strong network in Styria.
Due to your studies and your work you are, or were closely related to the TU Graz and the RCPE. Is any future cooperation planned?
Currently I am working on my dissertation, which is excellently supervised by Prof. Khinast. For the short term the completion of my doctoral program is the next target. In addition, joint research projects and services with the Graz University of Technology and the RCPE are already planned. I am looking forward to a close cooperation in the future.
