Martin Schallbruch new Deputy Director of Digital Society Institute at ESMT Berlin
As of May 1, Martin Schallbruch is the new Deputy Director at the Digital Society Institute (DSI) at ESMT Berlin. Until February 2016, he was Director General for Information Technology, Digital Society, and Cyber Security at the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and significantly involved with the digital agenda of the federal government. At the Digital Society Institute, he will manage the research group Cyber Innovation and Cyber Regulation. The Digital Society Institute was founded at ESMT Berlin in October 2015. Allianz, BASF, EY, and Volkswagen are actively engaged in the institute.
“The digitalization of society is progressing, and it is extremely important to underpin solutions to emerging challenges with research,” says Martin Schallbruch. “I am delighted to apply my previous experience to the Digital Society Institute in order to make crucial progress in this area.”
Martin Schallbruch has a degree in informatics and years of practical experience in the field of digitalization, its social, economic, and political implications, as well as the possibilities of governmental regulation and its limitations. From 1998, he worked at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, initially as Head of the Office of State Secretary Brigitte Zypries, then as Chief Information Officer and Deputy Commissioner of the Federal Government for Information Technology, before leading the Directorate General for Information Technology, Digital Society, and Cyber Security. His team was responsible for the National Cyber Security Strategy and IT Security Law, amongst others. Martin Schallbruch is also a lecturer in IT security law at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and has published over 30 articles on questions of legal and administrative computer science, IT security, and public IT. His research focuses on issues of cyber policies, cyber security, and the regulation in cyberspace.
