Uni Bayreuth: New Master’s Programme Development Studies Set to Start in Autumn 2016
Processes of development, change, and globalization in Latin America, Asia and Africa are playing an increasingly important global role in this day and age. The new German- and English-taught master’s programme Development Studies (M.A.) – set to begin in Winter Semester 2016/17 at the University of Bayreuth – addresses the causes, conditions, and consequences of such processes. The master’s programme is international and interdisciplinary, offering graduates excellent career prospects as specialists in development. And FYI: the programme is tuition-free. Applications are now being accepted!
Universities in Scandinavian and English-speaking countries have long included Development Studies in their range of courses. In such courses, processes of development, change, and globalization are examined worldwide from an interdisciplinary perspective. The focus of the courses currently offered is on countries in the Global South (the so-called developing countries) and on processes of transformation and radical change.
Development Studies is only offered at a few locations in the German-speaking world; and in Southern Germany, it has not been offered at all up to now. The University of Bayreuth has now siezed this opportunity to ‘fill the gap’ in Southern Germany with the involvement of its institutes for development sociology and politics, economics, and geography.
“Bayreuth’s master’s programme Development Studies also has a unique feature,” explains Prof. Dr. Dieter Neubert, Programme Coordinator for Development Studies and Chair of Development Sociology. “In addition to a diverse array of research on the Global South, Bayreuth’s scholars can point to the extensive expertise in Bayreuth’s research priority on African Studies. Interdisciplinary African Studies at the University of Bayreuth has been at the international forefront for years.”
Interdisciplinary and practice-oriented
The programme of study combines courses in development sociology and politics, geography, and economics. On this basis, students acquire subject-specific as well as interdisciplinary and practical skills. “Our students benefit from the close cooperation between the departments involved. Thanks to the programme’s interdisciplinary approach, graduates will be alert and open to the theoretical and methodological diversity that they will encounter again and again, even in practical work in the field of development. This will in turn enable them to better understand and assess complex development processes in times of global change and to apply this in practice as part of a project-focused unit that they plan and carry out independently,” said Prof. Dr. Neubert.
Excellent career prospects
The range of international areas of activity open to development experts is immense and continues to grow as the Global South gains more and more economic and political significance. Examples open to graduates of the programme Development Studies include:
- Institutions active in development cooperation or with strong ties to the Global South, from ministries and national development agencies to the United Nations
- Private organizations active in development cooperation such as Brot für die Welt, Care, Caritas, Oxfam, or Welthungerhilfe
- Internationally active businesses in industry, trade, and finance
- Industry federations: chambers of foreign trade and business associations
- Media and cultural institutions
Talented master’s students also have excellent chances to pursue doctoral research at the University of Bayreuth in order to prepare themselves for an academic career. The University of Bayreuth Graduate School supports the University’s doctoral researchers across all subjects, both in their independent research and in their personal development.
In line with the international nature of the field of development studies, courses are taught partially or completely in English, allowing the entire programme of study to be completed in the English language.
