New bachelor’s and master’s programmes at the University of Bayreuth
What are your plans now that you’ve graduated high school? Have you decided whether to pursue vocational training or a university education yet? And what about after your bachelor’s degree: Will you start working right away, or do you plan to get your master’s degree first? Many young people are currently thinking about questions like these. And with its wide range of attractive degree programmes, the University of Bayreuth is a good place to turn to for answers. This year, the University is adding three new bachelor’s programmes and three new master’s programmes to its broad spectrum of around 150 programmes of study.
The University of Bayreuth, located in northern Bavaria, has always reacted to social changes and the related demands on sciences and business by creating innovative, interdisciplinary programmes, e.g. its master’s programme Sport Technology or its supplemental programme in Environmental Law. With around 13,400 students, the University of Bayreuth is a comfortable size, and its students and instructors make contact with each other quickly thanks to the University’s unique campus. This encourages interdisciplinary thinking and a cooperative atmosphere, reflected in a range of interdisciplinary degree programmes such as the new bachelor’s programme Environment & Resource Technology, which links engineering and the geosciences in a unique way.

A brief overview of the new bachelor’s programmes
The degree programme Environment & Resource Technology (B.Sc.) addresses the challenge of protecting the global ecosystems and supplying the growing world population with sufficient raw materials and energy. It combines a clear engineering focus with (geo-)ecological subjects relevant to resources and the environment so that graduates are able to develop interdisciplinary solutions to problems in environmental and climate protection. The University of Bayreuth also offers attractive master’s programmes such as Energy Science & Technology, Biotechnology, Biotechnology and Process Engineering, or Geoecology, thus offering outstanding graduates the prospect of going on to pursue a research-based master’s degree and doctoral degree.

In the degree programme Law & Business (LL.B.), students are prepared for activities in commercial enterprises such as banks, tax consultancy firms, or auditing firms, since in practice there is a high demand for experts who are able to argue from both business and legal perspectives. This interdisciplinary model is unique in Germany and offers students promising career prospects.

The University of Bayreuth is also adding to its programmes in teacher education. The bachelor’s programme Professional education with an emphasis on electrical engineering (B.Ed.) teaches students the interrelationships of electrical engineering on the basis of engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences in addition to skills in didactics and education. The objective of the programme is to provide a basis for master’s studies; the master’s programme then qualifies one to become a teacher at vocational schools.

A brief overview of the new master’s programmes
Bayreuth’s degree programme Mechanical Engineering (M.Sc.) – in contrast to mechanical engineering programmes elsewhere – offers students a high degree of flexibility. The range of elective modules allows students to individualize their specializations according to their interests and career objectives. They benefit from the expertise of 16 research groups, covering areas such as automotive and mechatronic technology, materials science, and process engineering and energy technology in addition to classical mechanical engineering.

The master’s programme Informatik (M.Sc.) is based on the recommendations of Germany’s Society for Informatics (GI): In other words, this German-taught programme has proven its quality in all parameters and meets the international standards for informatics degrees. Thanks to its research and project orientation, the programme seeks to provide a highly sought-after training profile and get students ready for a career, for instance in the computer industry or in research. Graduates can also follow up their degree with a doctorate.

In the master’s programme Computer Science (M.Sc.), students hone their analytic, creative, and constructive skills in developing and improving software and hardware systems. In contrast to the established master’s in Applied Computer Science and the new master’s in Informatik, the courses in the master’s programme Computer Science are bilingual (German and English). After earning a master’s degree, graduates can start a doctorate or an international career with complex responsibilities in the sector in the areas of research, development, implementation, distribution, and maintenance.
