University of Cologne Improves Its Position in International University Ranking
The UoC rose by several places in the current Academic Ranking of World Universities, and is now among the 151 to 200 best universities worldwide.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (also known as Shanghai Ranking) is a worldwide research ranking that the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy has published annually since 2003. Compared to the previous year, the University of Cologne has improved nationally from the segment between places 16 and 22 to the segment between places 8 and 14 of German universities. It has also improved its position internationally and is now among the 151 to 200 best universities, whereas last year it was among the 201 to 300 best universities.
ARWU assesses more than 1,200 universities worldwide every year and ranks the best eight hundred. The ranking uses six indicators, including Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals awarded to scholars, scientists and graduates of the institution.
The number of frequently cited publications, the number of articles in the journals Nature and Science and the number of articles published in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) also figure into the ranking.
