You are cordially invited to a live press briefing by the Genome 10,000 consortium (G10K), which will announce the official launch of the international Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP; www.vertebrategenomesproject.org, password: 2SequenceAllLife# before going public on Sep 13th) and the release of its first new 14 high quality reference genomes for species representing all five vertebrate classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The mission of the VGP is to provide high quality, near error-free, and complete genome assemblies of all 66,000 vertebrate species on Earth to address fundamental questions in biology, conservation, and disease. Phase 1 of the project aims to create reference assemblies of select species representing all vertebrate orders that evolved since the last mass extinction event that killed off dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
All information released during the press briefing, including the press release, will remain under embargo until the next day at 8:00 a.m. U.S. EST, Thursday, 13 September 2018. Journalists attending the press briefing will receive a copy of the full press release under embargo at registration on 9:30 a.m. U.S. EST.
The speakers at the press briefing will include: Dr. Erich Jarvis, G10K Chair and professor at The Rockefeller University and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; Richard Durbin, lead at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, UK; Gene Myers, lead at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics and Center for Systems Biology, Dresden, Germany; Adam Phillippy, G10K Assembly Chair and lead at the National Human Genome Research Institute, NIH, Bethesda MD; Harris Lewin, lead for Earth Biogenomes Project, UC Davis, CA; Emma Teeling, lead for Bat 1K, University College Dublin, Ireland; Steve O’Brien, G10K Cofounder, lead at the Dobzhansky Center, St. Petersburg Russia, and former US National Cancer Institute intermural director; David Haussler, G10K Cofounder, UC Santa Cruz, CA, and investigator the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; and Oliver Ryder, G10K Cofounder, and Kleberg Endowed Director of Conservation Genetics, San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.
The Q&A session during the press briefing will also include the following additional panelists (Federica Di Palma, G10K Council, Director Earlham Institute for Genomics, UK; Paul Flicek, ENSEMBL genome database director, Genome Annotation, Cambridge, UK; and Arang Rhie, Genome Assembler, NIH, USA) as well as other G10K consortium and technology partners in the audience.
Following the press briefing, one-on-one interviews can be scheduled with any of the panelists and additional G10K consortium members and technology partners from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm (list of available interviewees below).
Pre-registration is required. To register, please reply via email. Please also indicate which one-on-one interviews you would like to schedule. Additionally, journalists are invited to attend lunch following the press briefing at noon (please RSVP with your registration). Journalists are also invited to participate in the opening sessions and reception of the 2018 G10K Annual Meeting from 1 p.m. to 6PM and will be given a press pass to attend.
