Alexander von Humboldt and Earth System Research – then and now: a symposium
This year, 2019, we celebrate Alexander von Humboldt’s 250th birthday. On this occasion a symposium at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (co-organized by GeoUnion Alfred-Wegener-Stiftung, the roof organization of the geoscientific institutions and associations in Germany) will present Humboldt’s epoch-making contributions to the Earth Sciences, to Geography and Global Ecology. The symposium will also connect Humboldt’s work with new achievements in Earth System Science in the 21st century.

On this occasion a symposium at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (co-organized by GeoUnion Alfred-Wegener-Stiftung, the roof organization of the geoscientific institutions and associations in Germany) will present Humboldt’s epoch-making contributions to the Earth Sciences, to Geography and Global Ecology. The symposium will also connect Humboldt’s work with new achievements in Earth System Science in the 21st century.
Humboldt addressed a large number of scientific disciplines, among them botany, zoology, geobotany, meteorology and climatology, paleontology, oceanography, stratigraphy, mineralogy, resources research and hydrogeology, but also the environmental impact of humans, erosion and climate change. Early on, he paved the way for a modern, integrated Earth System Science approach to decipher, characterize and model the different forcing factors and their feedback mechanisms that govern the Earth’s systems. The symposium will also highlight the importance of science history and science communication.
The conference brings together a number of leading European scientists from different disciplines, e.g. Andrea Wulf (London), Celal Şengör (Istanbul), Antje Boetius (Bremerhaven), Gerald Haug (Mainz), Johannes Vogel (Berlin), Volker Mosbrugger (Frankfurt/Main), Stephan Brönnimann (Bern), Oliver Lubrich (Bern), Carina Hoorn (Amsterdam) und Manfred Strecker (Potsdam). The symposium will be held in English.
Participation is open for the general public, there is a small fee of 25 € (15 € for students). More information may be gathered from the organizers mentioned in the
