Towards high performance energy districts across Europe
CITyFiED has developed a replicable, systemic and integrated strategy for sustainably renovating residential districts. The underlying purpose of CITyFiED is to reduce energy demand and GHG emissions while increasing the use of renewable energy sources. CITyFiED aims to achieve this by developing and implementing innovative technology and methodologies for building renovation, smart grids, district heating networks, and mobility. There will be a wider benefit for energy suppliers, SMEs, citizens and society as a whole. Steinbeis 2i GmbH has published an Innovation Management Guide.
The three demo sites in Laguna de Duero-Valladolid (Spain), Soma (Turkey) and Lund (Sweden) served as real-life test cases for deep building retrofitting, novel district heating and grid management solutions, all of which have been designed to be sustainable and cost- effective.
Retrofitting of 190,000 m2
The outcome is the energy efficient retrofitting of 190,000 m2 of living space across 2,067 dwellings. Over 4,500 citizens were involved by having a say on the renovation measures. Through this, CITyFiED was able to address the technological and social aspects of each district in a methodical and systematic way. On average, CITyFiED has achieved 35% in energy savings and 61% in the use of renewable energy.
Five years of smart solutions
The CITyFiED project has ended after five years of sustained efforts towards inclusive and smart solutions for its towns and cities. The main challenge of the project consisted in setting up a city cluster and a community of interest spanning 55 cities while designing novel solutions for today's green urban challenges. Different nationalities, companies, organisations and people have been involved in this endeavour, all pulling in the same direction to produce impactful outcomes for citizens across Europe and beyond.
Solutions and access to a new market
The role of the company and project partner MIR ARASTIRMA VE GELISTIRME A.S. in Turkey was to develop two innovative solutions for smart cites: Low-temperature radiant heating and high-temperature radiant cooling panels for buildings and Pre-insulated reinforced thermoplastic composite pipes for LTDH systems. Both products are now ready for the market and as a spin-off Dizayn Building Solutions have been founded. The spin-off produces, sells and implements radiant heating/cooling panels as a turn-key contractor. They see a considerable market potential for these solution packs in such regions especially where low-valued geothermal sources or waste heat producers can be found.
Steinbeis 2i GmbH, the partner in charge with exploitation, market deployment and replication tasks in the CITyFiED project, helped them to increase their awareness on technical and administrative weak and strong points as well as the competitors of the products. They helped to develop better market strategies and technology improvement roadmap.
The CITyFiED Legacy
Today, CITyFiED offers a wealth of information, insights and experience in various media formats to help others build on the project's legacy going forward: There is:
• a best practice book
• videos, in-depth reports, info packs
• the project website
• and the CITyFiED Innovation Management Guide booklet, which was provided by Steinbeis 2i GmbH as “Exploitation, Market Deployment and Replication” work package leader.
CITyFiED was a five-year endeavour (04/2014 – 03/2019) co-funded by the EU and coordinated by Fundación CARTIF, Valladolid, Spain. The consortium comprised 21 partners from five countries from RTD, industry, public authority, exploitation and communication.
