Berlin becomes the capital of demographic change
From 22 to 24 March 2021, the Berlin Demography Days will take place for the first time. At the online event, the Vice-President of the European Commission Dubravka Šuica will speak about the relationship between democracy and demography. In addition, the winners of the European Demographer Awards will be honoured.
The next two decades will be marked by the last large cohorts of baby boomers reaching retirement age. At the same time, the composition of the population is changing. Our society is getting older, but also more diverse. This poses challenges for the welfare state and civil society. In many locations, European democracies are being put under substantial pressure. Additionally, the Global South is affected, where we often lack necessary data to better understand population development. These key topics will be discussed by experts from science, politics and society from all over the world.
At the public launch event on 22 March 2021, 1 to 2:30 pm, the following speakers will discuss the topic of intergenerational fairness: Anna Braam (Chairperson and Spokesperson of the Foundation for the Rights of Future Generations), Clara Mayer (Spokesperson for Fridays for Future Berlin), Franz Müntefering (former Federal Minister and Chairperson of the Federal Association of Senior Citizens' Organisations e. V.) and Elisabeth Niejahr (Member of the Executive Board of the non-profit Hertie Foundation).
From 3 to 5 pm, the event will feature, among others, the Vice-President of the European Commission and the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Stefan Zierke, as well as the European Demographer Awards Ceremony.
You will find the current programme of the Berlin Demography Forum, the European Demography Forum (23 March 2021) and the Global Demography Forum (24 March 2021) online (see below). Simultaneous translation into English will be available on all three days.
You can register online (see below).
The organisers are Diakonie Deutschland and the European research network Population Europe. The event is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, the Federal Ministry of Health and the Förderfonds Wissenschaft in Berlin.
