GDCh Science Forum Chemistry goes digital for the first time
Most important chemistry congress in German-speaking countries presents international top research
The GDCh Science Forum Chemistry (WiFo) 2021 will take place from August 29 to September 1, for the first time completely online due to pandemics. The most important chemistry congress in the German-speaking region with usually more than 2000 participants from Germany and abroad is organized by the German Chemical Society (GDCh). The scientific program includes international top research on socially relevant „megatopics“ such as infection research, energy, sustainability and climate research. Numerous symposia will also be devoted to different fields of chemistry. In addition, some of the GDCh’s most prestigious prizes will be awarded – including the Karl Ziegler Prize endowed with 50,000 euros and the newly introduced Hildegard-Hamm-Brücher-Prize for diversity in chemistry. A poster session and a job fair will enable young scientists in particular to present themselves in a year with few events. In addition, the digital conference platform offers very good opportunities to expand the personal network.
Infection research, energy, sustainability and climate research – these topics pose new, urgent challenges for science worldwide. The impact that chemistry can have on solving global problems will be demonstrated at the GDCh Science Forum Chemistry, which will take place in 2021 under the slogan „Chemists create solutions“. In daily plenary symposia, leading experts will present how pandemics can be fought in the future, how chemistry can contribute to the energy of the future, and how chemistry can support and drive sustainable developments. Numerous symposia organized by GDCh divisions will also provide insight into current scientific developments and findings from the world of chemistry.
„Our next WiFo will not only be digital, but also much more international than previous science forums,“ emphasizes GDCh President Professor Dr. Peter R. Schreiner. „Most of the scientific presentations will be held in English, and the digital event will make it easier for interested people from all over the world to attend the WiFo.“ The GDCh therefore expects a significantly higher number of international scientists than at previous WiFos.
At the WiFo opening ceremony on August 29, the Karl Ziegler Prize will be awarded – with an endowment of 50,000 euros, one of the most highly endowed German chemistry prizes. As a further highlight, the Hildegard-Hamm-Brücher-Prize for diversity in chemistry will be awarded for the first time. With this new prize, the GDCh honors individuals, teams, or organizations that are committed to promoting equal opportunities in chemistry through innovative projects.
In addition to the scientific program, WiFo 2021 also offers numerous networking opportunities – not a matter of course for an online conference. The digital conference platform, which has already been used several times, offers participants direct (video) chat functions as well as so-called „Meet & Mingle“ rooms that enable (video) chats in groups. Direct networking and the exchange of contact data is also possible. This strong social component allows contacts to be made during coffee breaks – almost like at a face-to-face event. In addition, a poster session, a job fair and a virtual exhibition, where numerous companies and institutions present themselves, offer many opportunities for interaction and networking. Young scientists in particular will also benefit from this: at favorable participation conditions, there are good opportunities to present one’s own research to an international audience and to establish and expand one’s professional network.
