Why there are fewer business successions than generally believed
What is the development of succession in Germany? Is it only due to a lack of successors that handover plans fail? The current policy brief of Förderkreis Gründungs-Forschung und IfM Bonn examines these and similar questions.
In the public discussion on business succession, the general meaning is that many companies are affected than are touched by the succession issue. According to Dr Rosemarie Kay (IfM Bonn), this has to do with an unsatisfactory data situation and a series of misconceptions. For example, in a dynamic competitive economy, only a minority of companies remain on the market long enough to face the succession challenge. And the businesses of most solo self-employed people are not suitable for a handover.
