Recommendation service for quality-assured open access journals helps authors to select a suitable journal for publishing their research results
HANNOVER, 21 April 2022 – The requirements for publishing open access are continually increasing and the number of open access journals continues to grow. And yet, many authors are unaware of relevant, quality-assured open access journals that would be suitable for publishing their research results. B!SON, a recommendation service for open access journals, aims to close this gap. A beta version has recently been released for all those interested: https://service.tib.eu/bison
User friendly: simply enter manuscript data to get list of journals
The tool is quite simple to use: after the title, abstract and/or references of a manuscript have been entered into B!SON, the system recommends a list of suitable open access journals that can help publishing authors in the decision-making process. The recommendations can be further filtered, exported or sorted. Moreover, additional information can be obtained for each journal. A score indicates the basis on which B!SON makes its recommendations – text similarity in the title and abstract or bibliometric similarity based on the references – making the output transparent and comprehensible.
“By developing B!SON, TIB and its partner SLUB have taken another important step in the transformation to open access. The tool we have developed supports researchers in their day-to-day work, and makes it easier for them to publish open access,” stated TIB Director Professor Dr. Sören Auer.
Feedback welcome!
The project partners, TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB), invite all those interested to test the prototype and provide feedback on the recommendation service B!SON. Being a beta version, B!SON’s user interface and recommendation algorithm may yet change. The feedback gained in the beta test phase will be considered and incorporated in the further development of the tool. The final version of the B!SON project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), will be released in early 2023.
How B!SON works
Based on elements of a manuscript to be published (title, abstract, references), the B!SON recommendation system identifies content-relevant, quality-assured open access journals. Similarity is determined using machine learning techniques as well as semantic and bibliometric methods; the data basis for similarity matching comprises open corpora of data (article metadata of the Directory of Open Access Journals, citation database of OpenCitations).
B!SON is primarily aimed at publishing researchers. The local integration of B!SON (for example, into library services) will be possible, meaning that the tool can also be used for publication support services.
