Professor Tobias Eggendorfer moves to the Cyberagentur
IT security specialist heads Secure Systems department
On 1 September 2022, Professor Dr Tobias Eggendorfer will take over as head of the Secure Systems Department at the Agentur für Innovation in der Cybersicherheit (Cyberagentur). The professor of IT security is moving from Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences to Halle (Saale).
Professor Dr Tobias Eggendorfer will be the first of three new department heads to start at the Cyberagentur in Halle (Saale) on 1 September 2022. "We are growing," emphasises Research Director Prof. Dr. Christian Hummert. "This applies both to the first completed projects and new calls for proposals as well as to our staffing. Therefore, we are pleased that we were able to bring excellent specialists and leaders like Professor Eggendorfer into our team."
He will support the cyber agency as head of the "Secure Systems" department. For this purpose, Tobias Eggendorfer has taken leave of absence as Professor of IT Security at Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences.
In the long term, he sees his task in measurable and verifiable IT security, which can also be enforced against the manufacturer through product and material defect liability, among other things. "We have to plan for IT security from the very beginning and design products appropriately. No one would staple cushions to cars after a crash test to make them safe," he vividly outlines one of his main areas of activity. According to him, safety fails in practice because safety seems to increase the complexity of operation and at the same time there is a lack of awareness of the need for it. Particularly research-intensive is the IT security of systems that are difficult to access, ranging from control systems in motor vehicles that cannot be constantly updated, to those of aircraft and (research) satellites or implanted medical devices.
Together with the future department head "Secure Society", topics such as digital consumer protection and cyber-resilient society are therefore important to him, in addition to technical issues such as secure hardware, secure operating systems, secure administration and secure critical infrastructures.
Professor Eggendorfer moved to a professorship endowed by Avira founder Auerbach at Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences in 2013. Four years previously, Eggendorfer taught and researched IT forensics and applied computer science as a professor in Hamburg. In addition to the purely technical aspects of computer science, he is interested in the framework conditions for the new technologies. Thus, he has recently published increasingly in the field of IT law and data protection and made research contributions there. At the same time, in his freelance consulting work, he often sees that change in favour of higher IT security faces emotional barriers.
