Awarded: twillo is “Digitaler Ort Niedersachsen“
Easily find and provide educational resources for higher education teaching with the portal for Open Educational Resources
HANNOVER, 3 November 2022 – “Sharing in Higher Education“ is the motto of the OER portal twillo (https://www.twillo.de), which the Digital Agency of Lower Saxony has now awarded as “Digitaler Ort Niedersachsen“ (Digital Place Lower Saxony). With this award, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economics, Labor, Transport and Digitalization honors initiatives, projects or institutions that actively contribute to the digital transformation in Lower Saxony.
Sharing educational materials means sharing knowledge
The OER portal is the central point of access for Open Educational Resources (OER) in higher education. Whether individual visualizations, videos, podcasts, scripts, course materials or complete courses – OER can be of a very different nature. The important thing is that they are published under an open license and in open formats. OER can be shared, modified, reused, adapted to specific teaching and learning contexts, and collaboratively developed.
“With twillo, we are providing much easier access to high-quality educational materials and openness in learning“ explains project manager Noreen Krause. Starting in August 2019 as part of the “OER-Portal Niedersachsen“ project the portal has been online since 2020. TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology is leading the project, which also involves the Lower Saxony institutions ELAN e. V., HIS Institute for Higher Education Development (HIS-HE) e. V., University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer, Osnabrück University and Stud.IP e. V.
In the meantime, around 1,500 educational materials have been published on twillo and can be reused. By integrating the OER search index (https://oersi.org/resources/), more than 55,000 resources can be found via twillo. “In addition to the infrastructure, twillo offers a wide range of services, such as competence-oriented training and advice on legal, didactic and technical issues relating to OER,“ adds Noreen Krause from TIB.
„We are very happy about the award as Digitaler Ort Niedersachsen. This is a great achievement for twillo, which makes an important contribution to an open structure of digitally based teaching and a culture of sharing in higher education,“ says TIB Director Prof. Dr. Sören Auer.
Due to the successful progress of the project and the milestones reached so far, the consortium of scientific institutions in Lower Saxony behind twillo recently received the promise of follow-up funding from 2023 to 2027 for a further 2.7 million Euros.
