1.5 million euros to attract world-class researchers at the University’s IAS
The University of Luxembourg will receive 1.5 million euros from the European Union’s flagship research programme, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, to finance ten research projects at the Institute for Advanced Studies Luxembourg (IAS). These will be part of a new Young International Academics programme, starting in 2024 with a total budget of four million euros. The Young International Academics postdoctoral programme will recruit and support top emerging international talents and their audacious interdisciplinary postdoctoral projects up to three years.
Esch-sur-Alzette, 8 November 2022 – The University of Luxembourg will receive 1.5 million euros from the European Union’s flagship research programme, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, to finance ten research projects at the Institute for Advanced Studies Luxembourg (IAS). These will be part of a new Young International Academics programme, starting in 2024 with a total budget of four million euros. The Young International Academics postdoctoral programme will recruit and support top emerging international talents and their audacious interdisciplinary postdoctoral projects up to three years.
To be selected in this programme open to all disciplines, candidates will have to bridge at least two distinct fields in bold, original, and high impact research. Applicants will be selected by an independent scientific council in two waves and will be invited to submit their breakthrough ideas in November 2023.
Contrary to regular postdoctoral programmes, Young International Academics researchers will be mentored by two supervisors, out of a pool of more than 350 potential supervisors and co-supervisors of all faculties and interdisciplinary centres of the University. They will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and infrastructure, specialized ‘à la carte’ trainings, and important conferences and events. The goal of this very selective programme is to leverage the University’s unique multicultural and interdisciplinary environment to attract and retain top talent in Luxembourg.
Through Horizon Europe’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), the European Commission funds research and innovation projects to boost top researchers’ careers through mobility and innovative doctoral and postdoctoral training. The MSCA help build Europe’s capacity for research and innovation by investing in the long-term careers of excellent researchers. The calls are highly competitive. Of 116 projects submitted in the 2021 call, only 26 were retained for funding. The application had been prepared and submitted under the leadership of Research Vice-Rector Jens Kreisel and the IAS project team.
“With the Young International Academics programme, the Institute for Advanced Studies Luxembourg opens its doors to worldwide talents in all disciplines who will contribute to further advance excellence in research at our University,”, said Prof. Claus Vögele, head of the Institute for Advanced Studies.
“The uniqueness of the Young International Academics programme will leverage the University of Luxembourg’s strong interdisciplinary research”, said Stéphane Pallage, Rector of the University of Luxembourg. “Researchers will enjoy a young and active research environment in close connection with national and international partners, where exploring risky and outstanding ideas is welcomed and encouraged.”
