Where do universities stand in digital teaching? New FIBAA certification "Excellence in Digital Education"®
A recent study by the "Hochschulforum Digitalisierung" (Higher Education Forum for Digitalisation) has established that almost all higher education institutions in Germany are concerned with digitalisation in teaching and learning. The study also concludes that many teachers are motivated to further educate themselves with regard to the didactic use of digital teaching and learning materials, but cite time resources as a limiting factor. The accreditation agency FIBAA in Bonn has followed this study with particular interest, because it has developed a certification with which it formulates and tests internationally comparable quality standards for digital teaching.
Numerous national and international higher education institutions are already implementing successful digital teaching concepts. For these higher education institutions, the accreditation agency FIBAA is offering a quality assurance instrument for digital teaching for the first time with the new certification "Excellence in Digital Education"®. The certification procedure can be used for online study programmes as well as for integrated digital teaching and learning concepts (blended learning). Higher education institutions can have themselves certified as an institution or individual study programmes.
"With the certification "Excellence in Digital Education"®, FIBAA has created an internationally applicable instrument for quality assurance in digital teaching, Thus FIBAA contributes to defining quality standards for digital teaching and learning nationally and internationally and making them comparable," explains Diane Freiberger, Managing Director of FIBAA. The certification process includes an examination in the areas of strategy, personnel and qualification, didactics, technical equipment and quality assurance. This examination is carried out in a "peer review process", in which experts from science and practice assess the university. A detailed report provides information on strengths and areas for development. "The certification not only aims to document a status quo, but also to secure the university's position for the next five years," says Freiberger. "With successful certification, universities and education institutions position themselves as modern and sustainable educational institutions with innovative teaching and learning concepts."
After a pilot phase, the "Excellence in Digital Education"® certification received trademark registration in the EU and Switzerland in 2022. Five certification procedures are currently underway at various international universities.
