Third "Universität Hamburg - Kyoto University Strategic Partnership Symposium"
Professor Gülşah Gabriel leads "One Health - Pandemic Challenges" session at Leibniz Institute of Virology
The University of Hamburg and Kyoto University continue their joint strategic partnership and came together on June 19 and 20 in the third "Universität Hamburg - Kyoto University Strategic Partnership Symposium 2023" on the topic "Planetary Health". As part of this event, the session "One Health - Pandemic Challenges" was held at the Leibniz Institute of Virology.
The session entitled "One Health - Pandemic Challenges" was chaired by Professor Gülşah Gabriel (Leibniz Institute of Virology) and Professor Hiroshi Nishiura (Kyoto University). There, scientists from the University of Hamburg, Kyoto University and the Leibniz Institute of Virology discussed latest data on zoonotic infections with pandemic potential such as the currently circulating avian influenza A viruses. Together they explored possibilities for intervention in the context of pandemic prevention and pandemic response.
"There is an urgent need to prepare internationally against future pandemics through close collaboration and constant exchange of data," said Professor Gabriel, head of the Viral Zoonoses - One Health department at the Leibniz Institute of Virology. Professor Gabriel's research focuses on understanding the molecular basis of influenza A virus transmission from birds to humans and viral pathogenesis in humans.
The "Universität Hamburg - Kyoto University Strategic Partnership Symposium 2023" on the topic "Planetary Health" was held in Hamburg on June 19-20 and is an outstanding example of the successful collaboration between the University of Hamburg and Kyoto University in the field of planetary health. By sharing knowledge and research results, the two institutions contribute to solving global challenges.
