The University of Glasgow Senate awarded Professor Friederike Welter (IfM Bonn/University of Siegen) the honorary doctorate for her research on the entrepreneurial Mittelstand and "Everyday Entrepreneurship".

In her laudatory speech, Vice Principal of the University of Glasgow and Head of the College of Social Sciences Professor Sara Carter emphasised how the research work of Professor Friederike Welter has played a decisive role in the development of entrepreneurship, and is highly relevant for entrepreneurial practice and Mittelstand policy: “Professor Welter's work has been greatly influential in switching research and policy attention away from a narrow focus on Silicon Valley style of entrepreneurship - venture-capital backed, technology start-ups - to a research canon that now understands the fundamental economic and social contribution of small businesses, the vibrant diversity and heterogeneity of entrepreneurship, and the importance of studying the quotidian experiences of everyday entrepreneurs.”

The University of Glasgow is synonymous with the Scottish moral philosopher and economist Adam Smith, whose tercentenary is being celebrated this year. In addition, the university, located in Scotland, is one of the best in the world.
