University of Technology Nuremberg appoints first Professor for Data Systems
The establishment of the Department of Engineering is in full progress: The University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) has just appointed the first Professor for Data Systems, Dr. Andreas Kipf. In co-operation with Founding Chair, Prof. Dr. Wolfram Burgard, he will develop and supervise the content of the first degree program of the newly founded university.
NUREMBERG. Founding president Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans Jürgen Prömel welcomes the new member of the university: „We are happy that our Department of Engineering is growing with such a dedicated and outstanding scientist. We cordially welcome Andreas Kipf to the UTN and to Nuremberg.” Prof. Wolfram Burgard, Founding Chair of the Department of Engineering adds: „Database systems are an important basis for making significant progress in the field of artificial intelligence – for example in image and speech recognition, process optimization or deep learning. With Andreas Kipf we have been able to recruit a database specialist with outstanding skills who already has in-depth experience at renowned research institutes such as MIT or the Technical University Munich.”
Research stays at MIT and the University of California
Beginning of 2024, Andreas Kipf will leave Amazon Web Services where he is presently working as Applied Scientist to come to UTN. His focus is on efficient index structures and query optimization. Before that, the 35-year-old was a post-doctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and did research in the field of machine learning for database systems. In 2020, he received his doctorate under Prof. Alfons Kemper at the Technical University Munich. In his doctoral thesis, Kipf dealt with the further development of analytical database systems. Between 2017 and 2020, while working on his doctorate, he also worked for Google in Mountain View (USA), Zurich and Munich. During his master’s degree program in software engineering at the University of Augsburg, the scientist also completed a research stay at the University of California in Berkeley. And even Nuremberg is not foreign to him: In 2012 he completed his Bachelor degree at the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm in information systems and management: „Nuremberg is a center of innovation and offers the ideal research environment. I am looking forward to returning to Franconia and helping to build a new university.”
Artificial intelligence and robotics as UTN’s focus areas
In 2022 the Department of Engineering was established as the first department of UTN. Prof. Wolfram Burgard, who also is a recipient of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz price, is the Founding Chair. He set the first subject focus with artificial intelligence and robotics which are also visible with the start of the first degree program: The master degree program Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, starting with the winter semester 2023/24, will provide the students with a comprehensive understanding regarding concepts and applications in both fields. The degree program is interdisciplinary, combines theory and practice in the modules and relies on interactive as well as digitally supported teaching and learning formats.
About the University of Technology in Nuremberg
The University of Technology in Nuremberg was founded on January 1, 2021. It is the first new foundation of a state university in Bavaria since 1978. With a consistently interdisciplinary approach, an innovative range of subjects, new teaching methods and a forward-looking organizational structure, a university with a model character in teaching and research is to be created. The plan is to create a university that is international, interdisciplinary and digitally oriented. When completed, around 6,000 young people will study on an urban campus that is networked into the surrounding neighborhoods.
