University of Technology Nuremberg celebrates second Campus Festival
The second campus festival on July 14 marked two milestones in the development of the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN): On the one hand, the construction ceremony for the first building on the campus took place in the presence of Minister President Dr. Markus Söder. On the other hand, the young university inaugurated the so-called Experience Cubes, which will bring the concept of UTN to life on campus.
NÜRNBERG. „The founding of the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) marks the first new university in Bavaria in over 40 years. We can only achieve structural change with technical progress: Science and research offer the best opportunities for new jobs. That is why Bavaria invests in research and development like no other state. UTN sets new accents in methodology, didactics and teaching. Through artificial intelligence and robotics, we are on the threshold of the greatest scientific evolution at an unprecedented speed. The figures for UTN speak for themselves: the Free State of Bavaria is investing over one billion euros in 6,000 student places and over 200 professorships“, Minister President Dr. Markus Söder opened the second campus festival of UTN. Marcus König, Mayor of the city of Nuremberg, added: „UTN gives the city of Nuremberg a new boost – scientifically, economically and in terms of urban development. A completely new and attractive neighborhood will be created around the University of Technology Nuremberg. Students from all over the world will enrich the city. And UTN will be a new and very important part of our innovation ecosystem. The cooperation between UTN, the Free State of Bavaria and the city is excellent and completely dedicated to the goal of shaping the future here.”
Bringing the concept of UTN to life
The inauguration of the Experience Cubes was the highlight of the campus festival. In the walk-through installations, UTN uses interactive and multimedia exhibits to explain its main principles: interdisciplinary, international, digital and sustainable. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans Jürgen Prömel, founding President of UTN welcomed the visitors: „We are a model university – a university of the future. The first buildings and structures for research and teaching are currently under construction. We already want to bring our ideas to life and therefore, we invite all interested citizens to visit the Experience Cubes.“ The four information structures have been designed for a sustainable and long-term use: The approx. 15 square meter large, identical buildings consist of a powder coated steel frame structure and recycled wood panels. A support frame with adjustable feet eliminates the need for concrete foundations. The cubes can easily be moved with a truck crane when new campus areas are created. Photovoltaic systems are installed on the green roofs. The contents of the digital exhibits are continuously updated and thus the Experience Cubes will grow with the university. They will be open to the public in the future and there will be visits and guided tours in regular intervals. UTN will publish the dates on its website (www.utn.de/experience-cubes).
Construction ceremony for the first building
The construction ceremony of Cube One was also part of the campus festival. During the ceremony, Dieter Maußner, Head of the State Building Authority Erlangen-Nuremberg, pointed out: “With the timely completion of Cube One, the first important building block has been laid on the way to an innovative, attractive university campus in Nuremberg.” In 2024 the Founding Executive Board and the Chairs of the Departments with their management staff will move into the first building on campus. In addition, parts of the administration, various central facilities and learning spaces will be located in Cube One. With a useable space of about 2,500 square meters and six floors, up to 120 people can be accommodated. The premises will be flexible in use and can be adapted to the desired purpose. Cube One is built as a wooden structure, the core is made of recycled concrete. Due to the construction method, the building has a very low energy demand and meets the passive house standard. A photovoltaic system on the roof generates part of the required energy. In addition, two of the exterior walls will have a lattice and be extensively planted with greenery.
Campus tours on the premises
In addition, the university informed interested visitors of the campus festival about the current state of construction during guided tours. The ensemble Your Daily Jazz Trio from the Nuremberg University of Music provided acoustic background music in the festival tent. In a kid’s corner, not only the little visitors were building origami robots and visualizing their ideas of the university of the future in drawings.
About the University of Technology in Nuremberg
The University of Technology in Nuremberg was founded on January 1, 2021. It is the first new foundation of a state university in Bavaria since 1978. With a consistently interdisciplinary approach, an innovative range of subjects, new teaching methods and a forward-looking organizational structure, a university with a model character in teaching and research is to be created. The plan is to create a university that is international, interdisciplinary and digitally oriented. When completed, around 6,000 young people will study on an urban campus that is networked into the surrounding neighborhoods.
