STEM Study Exploration Week: From the Sistine Madonna to Silicon Saxony
Students from German Schools Abroad on a Trial Study Program at TU Dresden
The thirteenth “TU9-ING-Woche”, the STEM Study Exploration Week for students from German schools abroad, is successfully coming to an end today. From August 28 to September 1, 2023, TUD Dresden University of Technology welcomed 20 students from 17 different countries who would like to study a technical or scientific subject in Germany.
Under the motto "From the Sistine Madonna to Silicon Saxony: Studying at TUD Dresden University of Technology", the participants gained comprehensive insights into various fields of engineering and natural sciences. The focus lay on practical experience, for example in the workshop "Packaging and Interconnection Technology of Electronic Assemblies" of the Centre for Microtechnical Manufacturing and the Institute of Electronic Packaging Technology. Here, participants learned about various process steps in the manufacture of an assembly at practical stations. In the workshop "Are You Still Gaming or Are You Already Researching? Traffic Simulation between Gaming and Science", the students learned how simulations and modeling, similar to computer games, can be used in science and for solving problems. The tour of Infineon, including a presentation by Silicon Saxony e. V., offered an insight into the practical applications of engineering and the world of work.
The program was concluded with visits to museums and city tours. While viewing important paintings and sculptures, the participants were able to encounter diverse themes such as mythological and biblical stories, everyday worlds, and landscapes. During excursions and campus tours, they got to know not only local students, but also their fellow students from all over the world.
The TU9-ING-Woche takes place as part of the BIDS program of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and is partially funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. Students in grades 11 and 12 can apply. Prerequisites include very good grades in STEM subjects and German – and, of course, a special interest in technology and engineering.
