Open Source Tool to help Municipalities make decisions on the path to Climate Neutrality
The kick-off for the Interreg BSR project "Climate-4-CAST" took place on November 23 and 24 at HafenCity University. The research project is developing and testing an open-source tool that illustrates the climate impact of individual measures for municipalities and to enable better-informed decision-making on climate protection.
How can municipal strategy and decision-making processes be made climate-neutral? How can the climate budget instrument contribute to this? The HafenCity University Hamburg is researching this in "Climate-4-CAST" together with an international consortium in 6 pilot cities in the Baltic Sea region. The aim is to support municipalities in making decisions on their ambitious climate targets.
Representatives of the 10 project partners from 6 countries across the Baltic region met at HafenCity University for the joint project kick-off in Hamburg. On November 23 and 24, the HafenCity University project team from the Chair of Urban Planning and Regional Development led by Prof. Dr. Jörg Knieling, Donald Alimi and Vanessa Kügler as lead partners welcomed the guests. Two days of lectures, thematic workshops and discussion rounds marked the start of the joint collaboration. There was also space to get to know each other, network and exchange ideas.
The aim of the joint work until 2026 is to develop an open source tool for municipalities in a co-creative process. The climate budget is intended to illustrate the climate impact or CO² impact of individual measures, visualize various scenarios, enable a cost-benefit analysis and thus better informed decisions for climate protection.
In addition to HafenCity University Hamburg, the cities of Aarhus, Bytom, Norderstedt, Östersund, Riga, Tampere and the Commission for Sustainable Cities of the Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC SCC) at the City of Turku, Kausal Ltd. and the University of Uppsala are partners in the project.
The project is funded by the INTERREG Baltic Sea Region 2021-2027 program of the European Union.
