Fraunhofer HHI and Silicon Allee join forces to revolutionize deep tech and AI commercialization
The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) and Berlin-based start-up network and venture-builder Silicon Allee have joined forces to revolutionize deep tech commercialization, marking a significant milestone in Germany's technology landscape. The aim is to significantly improve the issue of spin-offs from research institutes. In accordance, the two parties have entered a strategic partnership which represents a fusion of two distinct yet complementary entities, poised to address the persistent gap between ground-breaking research and commercial realization.
Germany boasts a wealth of untapped research potential, particularly in the field of AI & deep tech. Despite consistently generating innovative concepts and cutting-edge technologies, there still exists some disconnect between academia and entrepreneurship, resulting in missed opportunities for turning research into products and thus economic benefit for society. Silicon Allee and Fraunhofer HHI are dedicated to addressing this challenge and offering a solution.
This innovative partnership introduces a structured program that is led by the Silicon Allee team which is now based at Fraunhofer HHI. The focus will be on nurturing aspiring founders and their innovative ideas thus incubating start-ups that are ready for Series A investments. The aim is to catalyse the transformation of research innovations into scalable, investable businesses that can compete on a global stage.
The program supports start-ups from the inception of business ideas to validation, team formation, financial backing, access to state-of-the-art facilities, fair licensing of patented technology, expert mentoring, and guidance provided by both Silicon Allee and Fraunhofer HHI. Start-ups or aspiring founders in the deep tech space can apply to join the program via the Silicon Allee website.
As Thomas Wiegand, Executive Director at Fraunhofer HHI explains, “This is a strategic collaboration to turn Fraunhofer HHI’s research into real-world impact by leveraging Silicon Allee's entrepreneurial and educational expertise. Our program aims to challenge and redefine the traditional terms, ensuring transformative research enters the marketplace, shaping a brighter future for Germany's technology landscape.”
Travis Todd, the co-founder of Silicon Allee, shared his perspective on this collaboration, "Over the past decade, I've witnessed a ton of untapped research talent in Germany when it comes to business. Much of this talent remains confined within the walls of academic institutions. When it does emerge in the form of start-ups, the terms offered often deter investors. Our mission is to ensure that these brilliant ideas reach their full potential. Our objective is to bridge the gap between science and entrepreneurship."
Silicon Allee, established in 2011, has played a pivotal role in building and nurturing Berlin's tech ecosystem. What began as a humble monthly founder’s meetup has blossomed into an influential tech hub renowned for its community events, incubation of successful start-ups, and the establishment of a global investor network.
Fraunhofer HHI is a leading research institute in various deep tech areas, such as artificial intelligence, mobile communications, video and data compression, computer vision and photonics. More than every second bit on the Internet is shaped by the video compression algorithms developed at HHI. Through its partnership with Silicon Allee, Fraunhofer HHI aims to unlock the commercial potential of its research and foster innovation in deep tech start-ups.
