University of Technology Nuremberg appoints Sage of Economy Veronika Grimm
Prof. Dr. Veronika Grimm will assume the Professorship of Energy Systems and Market Design at the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) on March 1, 2024.
NUREMBERG “The appointment of Professor Grimm is an important step for us in the further development of UTN as an interdisciplinary technical university. In the realm where artificial intelligence intersects with economics, her expertise has the potential to explore new horizons, enabling us to address global challenges in the field of energy markets and market processes with a pioneering spirit", welcomed Founding President Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans Jürgen Prömel the new professor, to whom he presented the certificate of appointment on Friday, January 10.
Cutting-edge research in market design and energy systems
After studying economics and sociology at the Universities of Hamburg and Kiel, Veronika Grimm completed her doctorate at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Subsequently, she held positions at the Universidad de Alicante in Spain and the University of Cologne. She also spent extended periods conducting research in Belgium at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Université Catholique de Louvain in Louvain la Neuve. Most recently, she was Chair of Economics with a focus on economic theory at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).
Since 2020, she has been a member of the German Council of Economic Experts (Sachverständigenrat zur Begutachtung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung). She actively participates in numerous committees and advisory boards - for example, the German Federal Government’s National Hydrogen Council, the Expert Commission on the “Energy of the Future” monitoring process at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi), the German Advisory Council on Consumer Affairs of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), and the Energy Steering Panel of the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council (EASAC). In 2019, she founded the Zentrum Wasserstoff.Bayern (H2.B), where she still is a member of the board.
Grimm's research focuses on energy markets and energy market modeling, behavioral economics, social networks, auctions and market design. Over the past few years, she has received numerous awards for effectively translating scientific findings into practical applications, including the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Gustav Stolper Prize from the Verein für Socialpolitik, the largest economists' association in the German-speaking world.
Developing forward-looking solutions with an interdisciplinary approach
Prof. Veronika Grimm is looking forward to her new role: "At UTN, we want to shape university in research and teaching. Here we have the opportunity to collaboratively and systematically delve into the realms of energy systems and market design. The comprehensive exploration of economic, technological and social aspects results in the decisive research questions. UTN's focus on data sciences and artificial intelligence allows us to create the ideal environment to better understand the interplay between technological progress and the market design. I look forward to working with my colleagues to develop solutions that will have a lasting impact on our future - for example in the energy sector."
