Christina Scheffler Appointed as Professor for Polymers for Construction at the Dresden University of Technology
Professor Dr.-Ing. Christina Scheffler has accepted the call to the Chair of Polymers for Construction at the TUD Dresden University of Technology (TUD). Her joint appointment with the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden aims to enhance innovative research endeavors in sustainable material technologies, benefiting both academia and industry.
Polymers play a vital role in various aspects of building materials, serving as binders, superplasticizers, surface protectants, fiber impregnations, and more. Their extensive use underscores their crucial contribution to resource-efficient and forward-thinking construction practices.
Professor Scheffler’s research concentrates on developing bio-inspired interphases structures between textile reinforcements and concrete. Moreover, she focuses on enhancing the adhesion of thermoplastic bicomponent fibers to bridge microcracks and improve the energy absorption of components made of mineral binders. Beyond fundamental research, she prioritizes application-oriented research conducted in collaboration with industrial partners. This approach facilitates the development and implementation of novel concepts, such as surface treatments for fibers using bio-based coatings or graded interphase structures in fiber composites.
Since 2014, Christina Scheffler has headed the Research Group Fiber-Engineering. Additionally, since 2016, she has held the position of Young Investigator at the Institute of Construction Materials. For several years, she has been actively involved in various programs at the TUD focusing on the development of innovative construction materials. These programs include the Collaborative Research Center Transregio 280 Design Strategies for Material-Minimized Carbon Reinforced Concrete Structures and the Research Training Group 2250 Mineral-Bonded Composites for Enhanced Structural Impact Safety.
Professor Scheffler has been involved in the industry and research association Composites United e. V. since 2014, leading the “Fiber-Matrix Adhesion” work group. She is also actively engaged in intensive international exchange with Luleå University of Technology (LTU) in Sweden, where she has been serving as a guest professor in the Polymer Composites Group of the Materials Science Department since 2023.
