zbMATH Open is awarded the Demailly Prize 2024
Prize for the promotion of open science in the field of mathematics
Karlsruhe, June 19, 2024 — zbMATH Open was awarded the first edition of the Demailly Prize. The French Mathematical Society, the Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics and the French Statistical Society, in conjunction with the Epijournal de Géométrie Algébrique, have created the “Jean-Pierre Demailly Prize for Open Science in Mathematics”. This prize is awarded every two years and recognizes projects that contribute to open science in the field of mathematics. The prize was awarded in 2024 for the first time.
The jury evaluated the projects based on several criteria. One important criterion was the scope of the project, which covers a wide range of interests within the mathematical community. This includes publications, software, authors and other resources. The innovative nature of zbMATH Open was particularly emphasized, especially the latest additions such as software search functions and API solutions.
A decisive factor for the jury was the accessibility of the project. zbMATH Open is completely open access and free to use. The jury also acknowledged the potential risks associated with funding, but emphasized the project's efforts to ensure its long-term success. These include funding from the Leibniz Association and ongoing policy changes to improve the sustainability of zbMATH Open.
"In a world facing increasingly complex challenges, mathematics plays a crucial role. It offers powerful tools for understanding and solving the problems of our time, be it climate change, public health or sustainable development. By highlighting contributions that benefit the entire scientific community, this award illustrates a commitment to shared progress that is environmentally friendly and socially fair,” said Merieme Chadid, President of the UNESCO International Scientific Council and Co-President of the Demailly Prize jury.

The prize will be given to Christian Bär (current Editor-in-Chief, via video), Klaus Hulek (former Editor-in-Chief) and Olaf Teschke (Managing Editor) on June 12 in Paris.
