US Presidential Election 2024: New Realities in a Polarized America CAIS Special on the US Presidential Election 2024
The US Presidential Election 2024 is proving to be one of the most unpredictable and intense in recent history. From a chaotic TV debate and an unexpected resignation to a failed assassination attempt and the emergence of a new female candidate, there is no shortage of dramatic developments.
To provide an informed perspective on these unfolding events, the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) is hosting a "CAIS Special" event featuring Christoph Bieber (CAIS), Klaus Kamps (HdM, Stuttgart), and special guest Juliane Schäuble, the US correspondent for Tagesspiegel.
The event, titled "New Realities in a Polarized America," will delve into the current state of the election campaign, examining how the nation is navigating these turbulent times just two months before election day.
Key topics to be discussed include:
• Digital Manipulation Techniques: How are deep fakes, voice cloning, and avatar candidates influencing the election campaign?
• Media Evolution: Are very large online platforms now the primary means of reaching the public, and has the era of “television politics” come to an end?
• Digital Voting Technology: Reflecting on over 20 years of the "Help America Vote Act," what is the current status and reliability of digital voting machines?
• Post-Election Regulation of AI: How might the US government respond to the challenges posed by AI in future elections?
Prof. Dr. Christoph Bieber is a research professor at CAIS specializing in Digital Democratic Innovations. His research covers digital transformation and democracy, election campaigns, ethics, and responsibility in political and public communication. Prof. Dr. Klaus Kamps is a Professor of Communication Studies at Stuttgart Media University since 2014. His expertise lies in communication theory, political communication, media policy, and media systems. He holds degrees in political science, media studies, and modern history from universities in Düsseldorf, DeKalb (USA), and Christchurch (New Zealand). His recent publications include "Das Mediensystem der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika" (UTB, 2021) and "Commander-in-Tweet: Donald Trump und die deformierte Präsidentschaft" (Springer, 2020).
Juliane Schäuble is a US correspondent for the Berlin-based daily newspaper Tagesspiegel since 2022, where she also manages the “Washington Weekly” newsletter, focusing on US politics with a special emphasis on the presidential election. She is the co-author of "Guns ‘n Rosé - Konservative Frauen erobern die USA" (Ch. Links, 2022) with Annett Meiritz.
