ShanghaiRanking: JMU with Top Performance
Once again, the ‘Global Ranking of Academic Subjects’ confirms JMU's top performance in medical technology, biological sciences, and physics. Moreover, the university is above average in other fields.
The renowned ShanghaiRanking annually compares the scientific performance of over 1,900 universities in 96 countries. It covers 55 fields of research in the natural sciences, life sciences, engineering and social sciences. The ranking assesses the number and frequency of citations of specialised publications, the internationality of research, and recognition through scientific prizes.
The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy published a new edition of the ‘Global Ranking of Academic Subjects’ (GRAS) on 11 November 2024. In this ranking cycle, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) once again achieved outstanding positions – particularly in medical technology, biological sciences, and physics.
JMU President Paul Pauli sees the university's research excellence confirmed once again by the ranking: ‘This is another great success for our university and, above all, for our researchers. They do outstanding work and give JMU very good national and international visibility.’
Ranking Highlights Three Areas of Excellence
In the field of medical technology, which includes neuroimaging, nuclear medicine and radiology as well as laboratory technologies, JMU ranks among the 75 best universities in the world, as in the previous year. Nationally, JMU is ranked 7th among the top universities in Germany; in Bavaria it is ranked 3rd.
JMU also performed impressively in the field of biological sciences, once again ranking among the top 100 leading global institutions. Within Germany, Würzburg is one of the top four universities and ranks 2nd in Bavaria. In the ‘Research Impact’ performance indicator in particular, JMU achieved the maximum score of 50 – proofing that its research results are internationally recognised and widely cited.
JMU also demonstrates excellent research performance in physics. In terms of research impact, the university achieved 40.2 out of a possible 50 points. This emphasises the contribution of Würzburg physicists to international research. In Germany, the university ranks 9th for this performance indicator, while in Bavaria it secures 2nd place.
Other Above-average Research Fields
The GRAS ranking also documents JMU's above-average performance in the fields of communication, ecology, biomedical engineering, human biological sciences, clinical medicine, dentistry and oral sciences as well as pharmaceutical sciences. In all these fields, the University of Würzburg is among the top ten per cent worldwide. It thus maintains its position as a leading global research institution.
