International Urban Health Summit 2025 in Hannover - #IUHS2025Hanover
Berlin, 26. März 2025. The challenges posed to health by urbanisation are significant: over 4.4 billion people live in urban areas today; by 2025, this figure will have risen to 6.7 billion 70 per cent of the world’s population. The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), in cooperation with the Inter-Academy Partnership (IAP) and the Volkswagen Foundation, is therefore hosting the International Urban Health Summit from 9 to 11 April 2025 at Herrenhausen Palace in Hanover.
80 international speakers will discuss key challenges and solutions for improving urban health with more than 200 participants based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
“How can we live healthier lives in cities? This is a key question for the future, not only here in Germany but in all regions of the world. The International Urban Health Summit 2025 brings together people from science, politics and civil society to agree on different approaches to this question and to collaborate on developing and discussing new ones. National and international academies of science have long been involved in the field of urban health, conducting research on relevant topics and bringing together a wide range of stakeholders. This is also the case in Hanover. I look forward to further impetus for a healthy, fair and sustainable future in the cities of this country and the whole world!”, emphasises Christoph Markschies, President of the BBAW.
“Our goal is healthy people in healthy cities. Science plays a crucial role in developing recommendations for policymakers and creating sustainable framework conditions for a healthy urban lifestyle. Our summit offers a platform to collectively develop creative solutions based on international experience that not only promote health but also strengthen democratic coexistence and social participation of all city dwellers”, says Detlev Ganten, initiator of the Urban Health Project.
