Book Presentation: “With Rosary and Scraped Devotional Madonna”
Texts from the DFG Collaborative Research Group "Polycentricity and Plurality of Premodern Christianities" in Dialogue with the Exhibition
FRANKFURT. “Mit Rosenkranz und Schabmadonna. Religiöse Alltagsbegleiter der Neuzeit im Dialog” [With Rosary and Scraped Devotional Madonna: Religious Everyday Companions of the Modern Age in Dialogue] is the title of a new exhibition exploring the material world of religion, on display at Goethe University Frankfurt during the 2026 summer semester. Inspired by the artistic interpretations of contemporary artist Eva Ulm, the exhibition traces the history of religious everyday objects – from pilgrim badges to edible Madonna figures, swallowable paper images, amulets of all kinds, and votive offerings in every imaginable form. Objects like these serve as important focal points for the formation and cohesion of religious communities – and for the processes studied by the DFG Collaborative Research Group “Polycentricity and Plurality of Premodern Christianities” (POLY). A compact collection of essays now sheds light on the many connections between the material culture of religion, individual expectations of salvation, physical practices, and social mechanisms in the premodern era. Edited by Prof. Hartmut Leppin, Prof. Birgit Emich, and Louise Zbiranski, the volume “Mit Rosenkranz und Schabmadonna. Religiöse Alltagsbegleiter der Neuzeit im Dialog“ will be unveiled on

The book presentation will be followed by a guided tour of the exhibition.
The Collaborative Research Group POLY explores religious diversity as both a driving force and a challenge for processes of community formation within premodern Christianity. Based at Goethe University Frankfurt, the research group is led by Birgit Emich and Hartmut Leppin.
