STEM Morning at the Wasserstoff Campus Salzgitter: Students Discover Technologies of the Future
How can hydrogen contribute to the energy transition? What role does the circular economy play in a sustainable future? Students received answers to these and many other questions during the STEM Morning at the Wasserstoff Campus Salzgitter, which took place on June 29, 2026, as part of Germany’s nationwide Hydrogen Week.
The event offered participants the opportunity to explore key future topics in the fields of energy, sustainability, and technology. Following an introduction to hydrogen and the circular economy, the focus shifted to hands-on experiences. At interactive learning stations, the students were able not only to learn about emerging technologies but also to experience them firsthand through practical activities and discussions.
At the “Hydrogen in Practice” station, participants gained insights into the hydrogen value chain – from the production of green hydrogen through its storage to its conversion back into electricity. With the help of a demonstration model, processes of energy conversion, data collection, and energy storage were clearly illustrated. The learning station is continuously maintained by the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST and serves as a permanent educational resource on hydrogen technologies.
Participants learned how sustainable business practices can work in real life at the “Circular Economy in Practice” station, which was developed and supervised by BeSu Solutions. Through an interactive, game-based format, they explored the challenges and opportunities of the circular economy and, using concrete product examples such as smartphones and solar cells, discussed ways to conserve resources from the perspectives of manufacturers, users, recyclers, and policymakers.
In addition, the young people gained direct insight into potential educational and career opportunities at Fraunhofer IST and the Technical University of Braunschweig in the future-oriented fields of hydrogen technology, sustainability, and applied research. The program was complemented by a guided tour of the Bosch training workshop.
With this STEM morning, the Wasserstoff Campus Salzgitter and the KREIS Competence Center for Work Research in Southeast Lower Saxony Region aim to spark young people’s interest in technical and scientific topics at an early age and to show them career prospects in fields relevant to the future.
