Cooperation agreements, Studies and teaching

Issues surrounding digitalisation and its significance for school education are the focus of the International Summer School ‘Global Teaching in a Digital World’, which is taking place from 28 June to 3 July at the Karlsruhe University of Education (KUE). The event is organised by the KUE and its partner universities in Ghana, Israel, Cameroon, Laos, Northern Ireland and the USA.

The programme for KUE prospective teachers and their counterparts from the partner universities includes lectures, workshops and school visits. Topics covered include the didactic design of digitally supported educational formats, the role of AI in education, global justice, ethical considerations and dealing with fake news and hate speech on the internet. Lecturers from the KUE and its partner universities are also taking part.

“Digitalisation is fundamentally changing the way we teach and learn. It offers a wide range of opportunities to make learning content more adaptable, motivating and accessible, but it also brings new challenges. For example, ensuring equitable access to information and communication technologies,” explains Prof. Dr Dorothee Kohl-Dietrich, head of the international cooperation project ‘Get ready for global teaching’, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space and the DAAD, and within the framework of which the International Summer School is taking place. Last year, the project focused on the themes of democracy, language and participation at the 2025 International Winter School.

For Dr Finita Jirndi Shey from the University of Yaoundé 1 in Cameroon, the 2026 Summer School offers “people from different cultural backgrounds unique opportunities to understand how inequalities and injustices caused by physical boundaries can be mitigated through digital education spaces.”

Prof. Marcelo Sztainberg from Northeastern Illinois University in the USA says: “The International Summer School is an important opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues and students from different countries and cultures and to learn from one another. Such face-to-face interactions enhance our partnerships and provide all participating institutions with new insights.”

And for KUE student Alessandro Cardoso, the Summer School represents an opportunity to “specifically expand his teaching skills in digital education and, in particular, in the use of artificial intelligence”. “I would like to use these innovative approaches to make my future teaching in subjects such as history and politics relevant to today’s world and methodologically diverse,” says Cardoso.
