New Continuing Education Program “Basic Qualification for Teaching Computer Science” at the University of Bremen
Over the next three years, computer science classes are to be introduced at the lower secondary level in all schools in Bremen and Bremerhaven. The University of Bremen is introducing a new program in the 2026/27 winter semester to prepare teachers for this task.
The Faculty and Mathematics and Computer Science and the Academy of Continuing Education are organizing the program on behalf of the Senator for Children and Education. The program was designed for teachers of other subjects who wish to qualify to teach computer science, which will soon be required at all secondary schools.
Twenty-seven teachers will participate in the certification program. Over the course of three semesters, teachers will attend courses twice a week at the University of Bremen. The program is designed so that participants can immediately apply the course content and concepts to their own teaching. Practical components further support this knowledge transfer.
The German Informatics Society (GI) emphasized in their latest computer science monitor report that establishing computer science as a mandatory subject nationwide is essential for imparting fundamental digital and computational skills. With this new qualification program, Bremen State is taking the necessary and forward-looking steps in this direction.
In addition to practical and technical computer science, the program includes the fundamentals of computer science education, as well as introductions to media and computer science, database systems, and the societal transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Starting in the third semester, computer science teaching methodology is integrated with practical experience in schools to make the program as hands-on as possible.
