EMBO Long-Term Fellowships now open all year round
Heidelberg, 28 November 2016 – In a move to increase the opportunity for young life scientists to obtain financial support for their postdoctoral research, EMBO announced today a significant change to its Long-Term Fellowship Programme. Following the change from a biannual deadline to a continuous application process, researchers wishing to secure such a fellowship are now able to apply throughout the year.
The change is the result of feedback from the scientific community: having specific eligibility cut-off points that were linked to the application deadlines meant that applicants could be ineligible as a result of their PhD completion date or the amount of time already spent in their host laboratory at the time of application. By removing the deadlines, it is now possible for young scientists to apply at the most appropriate time during their careers.
“This major change was made with our applicants in mind,” explains EMBO Director Maria Leptin. Long-Term Fellowships have been part of EMBO since the organization’s beginning, with more than 6,000 having been awarded since 1964. Throughout this period, EMBO has continued to evolve the fellowships in a way that meets the life science community’s needs.
“We recognize the challenges that young researchers face, and offer suitable solutions,” continues Leptin. “Just last year, for example, we emphasized our support for preprints by considering preprint manuscripts as part of applicants’ publications list. And we previously introduced parental leave, child allowance and part-time working options to ensure that we offer young researchers with family the opportunity to benefit from our fellowships.”
The overall eligibility criteria for the fellowships as well as the total number of fellowships awarded remain unchanged. Evaluation of applications will take place twice a year, in spring and autumn.
About EMBO Long-Term Fellowships
EMBO Long-Term Fellowships support international mobility in the life sciences, with more than 6,000 having been awarded since 1964. The fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years and support post-doctoral research visits to laboratories throughout Europe and the world, with particular emphasis on international exchange.
The benefits of EMBO Long-Term Fellowships include parental leave, part-time working option, childcare allowance, and a private pension scheme. In addition, EMBO accepts preprints as part of an applicant’s publication record, in order to prevent an application being delayed by the publication process.
Applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent certificate at the start of the fellowship and must not have obtained this degree longer than two years before the date they submit their completed application.
